| The Parco del Gigante is a world rich in historical, cultural, and natural associations. As an outsider unfamiliar with the languages of the landscape and its inhabitants I knew I would fail to grasp many of those associations, but I hoped that the freshness of my apprehension would compensate in part for my lapses. Early in my stay I began thinking about the simple device of paired pictures as a way to organize my explorations. I did not want to spend 18 days responding randomly to this feast of new sensations, but neither did I want to lock myself into a conceptual scheme that would control my every move before I had a clear idea of where I was. |
